Outdoor Gift Works is absolutely committed to making environmentally friendly decisions and reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible. These decisions and efforts are at the core of our operations; they are not a marketing strategy or an afterthought. The outdoors inspires us as a company and as individuals, so it seems more than appropriate for us to support our environment in any way possible.

Reduce and Reuse

Until the snow flies, we bike to work almost every day, and even then you’ll see some bikes parked in front of our building. We have reduced our building’s exterior lighting from over a dozen lights to one. Our utility bills for a 5,500 s.f. building are less than my house (unfortunately for me), which is half the size.

We are very proud of our packaging and we are constantly updating and implementing new ideas to reduce our materials. Like many of you, we hate packaging peanuts. We don’t use them and we don’t order them. We do reuse them, however. Rather than pouring them into your box, we bag them in reused plastic bags to create packaging pillows. The pillows provide the necessary padding yet they won’t be littered all over your living room floor upon the opening of your package. Our old paperwork is shredded and packed into these pillows as well. When weight is an issue, we have come up with some innovative cardboard panel designs to protect your item, and many of those panels are cut from old boxes.

The apparel that we carry arrives wrapped in a variety of plastic bags. We reuse these bags in packaging, as I mentioned, and in shipping. You may find that some of our items are wrapped in bags with names that do not match your item. This is because we are trying to reuse plastic and protect your item from dust or dampness. Many of you will notice that the shipping box looks like it has been used before. Well, it has. We reuse our boxes whenever possible.  If you are shipping a gift, we ship with new boxes. When we receive shipments from our suppliers, we reuse the boxes in our warehouse for storage and shipping purposes. When the boxes have seen better days, we recycle them. We also recycle all catalogs and cans – glass recycling has unfortunately been stopped in our area.

Additionally, we support suppliers that are tuned into creating products with natural and sustainable materials.  A sampling of the product materials we are excited to carry and share with customers are made with organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and recycled fabrics. The high quality and durability of products are also paramount in the reduction of waste and material. We subscribe to the belief that because our products are of a higher quality it reduces consumption over time.
